If there's a delicate and refined discipline in textile art, it's gold embroidery!
Gold embroidery, also known as cannetille embroidery, is an embroidery technique executed entirely by needle and hand, using metallic rather than gold thread. This technique, which originated in ancient China, is said to have made its appearance in Europe thanks to silk merchants. Gold embroidery took off in England in the Middle Ages, and English embroiderers' pieces were highly prized. The technique crossed time and continents, but became less common from the 19th century onwards, reserved for haute-couture, military and liturgical garments. Today, gold embroidery is enjoying a renaissance, notably in jewelry.
